MAK architecture tour : kun house

kun house / richard neutra, architect / 1936

... last but not least, the kun house. it's currently under extensive restoration, but what a treat still! it is said that julius shulman's career as an architectural photographer started with this house. hence, had to take a photo of his black + white print that was hung on the wall. in fact, that was the very last shot i took that day, which to me, was quite fitting. click here to see a recap of all six houses that were featured on the MAK architecture tour. can't wait for next year's!

MAK architecture tour : hillside house

hillside house / carl louis maston, architect / 1962

... very much like the gantert house, the hillside house is also set into an existing hill at a 45 degree angle. the use of concrete throughout became a natural retaining wall all on its own. don't you just love the pumpkin sitting there in the concrete cutout? such a great detail. stay tuned for the last house on our MAK architecture tour next week. happy friday everyone!

MAK architecture tour : lovell health house

lovell health house / richard neutra, architect / 1928-29

... finally onto one of the two neutra's designs of our MAK architecture tour! the lovell health house is such an iconic piece of modern architecture. the interior is just as impressive – many details were kept intact for over eighty years. the embedded light fixtures in the staircase are original model T ford headlights, amazing. i love neutra's work for so many reasons, but on a more personal note, i feel very lucky and honored to be living in a neutra townhouse. it's just one of those life experiences that i can't quite explain...

MAK architecture tour : gantert house

gantert house / pierre koenig, architect / 1981

... moving on to a more modern house on our MAK architecture tour. the canopied carport and the sheep figurine alone is fabulous, no? situated high up on the hollywood hills, this site was deemed un-buildable by the city because of the 45 degree slope of the hill. but look what koenig did with it...

MAK architecture tour : gold house

gold house / r.m. shindler, architect / 1945

... second stop on the MAK architecture tour. the gold house to me, is all about contrasting angles and geometries. ohhh that fireplace... don't think i've seen one quite like it before. and because i wanted to give each house its own shining moment, i will be posting one per day for the next several days. four more to come!

MAK architecture tour : shulman house

shulman house / raphael soriano, architect / 1947-50

... the MAK center had their annual architecture tour on sunday, oct 10 and this particular event was dedicated to the renowned architecture photographer julius shulman (it would have been his 100th birthday!) first stop on the tour was his very own home. contrary to his black and white photography, there were pops of color to be found throughout. quite a pleasant surprise.
