the word... solitude

Over the long weekend last week, I decided to catch up on the show The Conversation with Amanda de Cadenet. Have you seen it? My good friend Jane recommended it and I finally sat down and watched it – all five episodes in one setting (she knows me well!) Hard to say which are my favorites, but at this point of my life, the Conversations with Diane von Furstenberg and Glenda Bailey really ring true to me.

"The most important relationship is the relationship you have with yourself." – Diane von Furstenberg

She also talked about how crucial it is to have solitude. I couldn't help but remember my birthday post this year. I wrote about spending time with myself, and how content I felt. Solitude. That is my word.

So when I was setting out to edit my regular Friday's pw.travelogue post, an idea came to mind. The second I saw this photograph, it spoke solitude to me – I could spend all day there, sitting on the bench, reading, thinking, writing. Instead of a full-on pw.travelogue today, I thought of posting this instead. It's what's on my mind, and it's something that I would like to continue to do more of. A single image, a single word.

What is your word? Tell me what it is and what it means to you. You may just see your word featured on the next post! Happy weekend everyone. x

  2. Creativity. To see the details, and not getting distracted by word and listen to my inner sense.

When I was studying abroad a mentor of mine told me "you can't take care of others without taking care of yourself first." I think my word would be "Care." I care deeply for my husband, my family, and my job, but I also care deeply for myself. Knowing what it best for myself so that I can give my best for the things I am passionate for.

Thank you for opening up that question.

    Cheers.

  4. I think my word would be "wait." Similar to solitude in some ways, both are definitely not things that our culture is accustomed to.

  5. Beautiful post! My word is "possibilities". I think we focus to much on talking about our problems instead of trying to find a way to solv them, why don't we focus on the possibilities instead?!

  6. I have two words... The first is "empathy," which is something that is so important to me. I try to live my life with that in mind, and I think it's a really under appreciated value.

My second word is "tranquility" (I actually realized this while looking at one of your Instagram photos of Chateau Pichon-Longueville!). I love being anywhere that fills me with calm and serenity.

  7. Every year, I choose a word of focus. This year, I'm (slowly but surely) working to "simplify."

  8. Mmm, Peggy, this is lovely. Thank you so much [to Jane too!] for turning me onto The Conversation—some very reassuring words for the transition in my life. Glenda Bailey's advice spoke so clearly to me as well. Wonderful things to carry with me :)

As I watched the episodes thinking about my word... and how it's evolved [and will continue to evolve], I'm stuck on 'determined'. While that word may have a negative connotation, to me it's coming from a place of perseverance, purpose, resourcefulness, and patience. Striving to be better and working towards the things that fulfill you... Dedication and persistence to that which you love.

  9. i love the solitude of the brown cushion. my intention for 2012 was to improve my focus, and honestly, although it is right above my computer, i've forgotten to work on it until you mentioned sharing our word. focus has definitely been challenged this year, but i can re-focus at any time and will. enjoy your weekend!

  11. My philosophy is exactly the same as Shaylah (two peas in a pod!) My word is 'peaceful' which I have been striving for for years!!! I know I'll get there !!!

  12. I think my word is faith. It's something I'm constantly struggling with. It's not so much about faith that there is a God, but faith that God is in control of my life, that he knows what is best for me, and that I am where I'm supposed to be. It's a constant struggle between trying too hard to make things happen and just letting things happen as they should.

  13. This is one of my favorite quote: "Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage. -- Anais Nin" So I think "courage" is my word.

Although looking at my photography studies, I would like the word "distill" - to concentrate and purify what's important and not be distracted by all the noises.

    Love your blog, as always!

  14. oh you have spoken to me too! i just found your blog a few days ago, and i really really love the way you see things and take the pictures. i'm a photographer and as we're all different, i see things in a different way, but i had your work on my mind the whole weekend! i couldn't let go of your traveling photos (i live in lisbon, btw)... and now in order to answer your question, solitude is also my word. i have a boyfriend, we live together, he goes away to his hometown almost every weekend, because it's on the beach and i love to stay in lisbon alone with time to do what i want to do, when i want to do it... it's rejuvenating! i always feel that you need to know how to entertain and to be with yourself, in order to be a good company to others. have a lovely day!
